France’s easily accessible rail network with direct services connecting Eurostar travellers (to such destinations as: the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany) help to make it the second most popular destination for tourists in the whole of Europe.
There are many excellent cultural events and historic sites to visit, as well as, sight-seeing opportunities and entertainment to suit all. French cuisine is especially worth sampling; aside from its most well-known delicacies of frog’s legs and snails (escargots), France, and in particular Paris, is full of local and traditional dishes. The most renowned delicacies, frogs’ legs and escargots (snails) are served in many restaurants, but there are also a great many other traditional and local dishes.
French Geography
France is divided up into 25 divisions, and then subdivided into departments. There can be up to 8 departments per division. 4 of the divisions are not in mainland France, and these are French Guiyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Reunion. The climate is varied, as 4 main types prevail for each compass bearing. The northern regions have a similar climate to Britain, whereas the south has a typical ‘Mediterranean’ climate of hot summers and cool winters. The western regions have an oceanic climate that gives cool summers and winters, which carries across towards the centre and east but with more difference in temperature.
French Language
Around 25 countries other than France speak French, including Belgium, Switzerland and Canada. An estimated 70 million people speak it as their first language, but in France itself there are several additional dialects for example Alsatian, Corsican, Breton, Provencal, Catalan and Flemish. The Basque language is dually spoken in the Basque region.
