Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is the second most densely populated European country, and is its leading economic power. It is also one of the richest in the world since its unification following the demolition of the Berlin Wall that divided East Germany and West Germany (1949-1989). The cuisine, similar to that of the Netherlands, often contains potatoes, but also fruit and savoury meats. Much of the food is imported, and traditional dishes include Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Bratwurst and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Gateau).
German Geography
The country comprises 16 states: Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia (technically, Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia generally consider themselves as free states). The climate is mild in summer and very cold in winter; the landscape in the north is flat-lying, but mountainous in the south (the Bavarian Alps and Black Forest).
Language
German is also spoken in Switzerland, Austria, Canada, the US, Latin America, the Baltic Republics, Belarus, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, and the Balkan States. It is the first language of over 100 million people worldwide, but is also important as a second language.
Most Popular City in Germany
Berlin, the capital, has the densest population around 8400000 people (there are over 82 million inhabitants in Germany), the best architecture, nightlife and artwork. However, the area of Baden-Württemberg is most popular with tourists, and the Black Forest is located there.German stations which have direct Eurostar services:
