The Netherlands
The Netherlands is in the northwest of Europe and is the most densely populated country in the world. It is world-renowned for tulips and windmills, but also for the “Dutch Masters” and other artwork, such as Rembrandt van Rjin, Johannes Vermeer, Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondriaan, and M.C. Escher (graphics artist). The culture of the Netherlands is incredibly varied, and the cuisine has mild flavours, often with potato and dairy products.
Netherlands Geography
There are 12 provinces in the Netherlands; Zeeland, Friesland, and Groningen which border the North Sea, and North Brabant, Limburg, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, North Holland, South Holland and Flevoland. The country is often referred to just as “Holland”, but this is not accurate. The Netherlands is flat-lying, and has to be protected by dunes and artificial dikes in the coastal regions, because 40% of it is actually below sea-level. Canals make use of this, and allow easier travel across the Netherlands.
Netherlands Language
The official language is Dutch, which is regarded as being the same language as Flemish in Belgium. It is also spoken in a small part of northern France, Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles. People in the Netherlands generally speak English as well.
Most Popular City in the Netherlands
Amsterdam, the capital, has a population of approximately 740000 people (the Netherlands’ total is over 16 million). Rotterdam and the seat of government, The Hague, closely follow.Dutch stations which have Eurostar services.
